A message from Mayor Bobbie Drew:
“Canada Day programming will not take place this year. The Township of Scugog joins the Region of Durham and other local municipalities as we ask residents to take a moment on Canada Day and reflect this year on our relationships both past and present with our indigenous neighbours. We would like to move forward with reconciliation in our hearts, in our minds and in our actions.
Our hope is that people will reflect on the tragedies of the past and hope for better future this Canada Day. We encourage everyone to take this time to be open and be honest about our historic and present day relationship with our indigenous neighbours and the land we are proud to call Canada and home.”

We encourage all residents to take time this Canada Day to reflect on our relationships — both past and present — with Indigenous communities, and to move forward with reconciliation in our hearts, minds and actions.
- Invest time in the modules offered as part of the Assembly of First Nations (AFN) It’s Our Time Toolkit. The AFN Toolkit consists of 22 learning modules that have been designed to enhance the understanding of important First Nations topics to ensure both students and teachers are learning in and out of the classroom.

Raising of Permanent Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation flag at Regional Headquarters
We are proud to stand with Indigenous communities. As a sign of respect, and in recognition of the community and lands on which we reside, the Region of Durham raised a permanent, new Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation flag at Regional Headquarters on June 21, 2021

Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation – Inaugural Flag Raising Thursday, May 31, 2012
A ceremony was held on Thursday, May 31, 2012 at 8:30 a.m., as the Township of Scugog had the honour of raising the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation flag at its Municipal Office. Council representatives from both the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation and the Township of Scugog, as well as local dignitaries, members of the public and municipal staff were in attendance, and shared in the pride of recognizing Scugog’s First Peoples.
The Township of Scugog added additional flag poles at the Municipal Office to help to promote inclusion, and allowed the Township to proudly fly the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.
Indigenous Land Acknowledgement
We are currently located on land, which has long served as a site of meeting and exchange among the Mississauga Peoples, and is the traditional and treaty territory of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation. We honour, recognize and respect this nation and Indigenous Peoples as the traditional stewards of the lands and waters on which we meet today.
